Keepers of the Keep Demo Review by Amjara

The Story & Gameplay

This is a game that is a cool mash up of a visual novel mixed with crpg elements such as dice rolls to determine the outcome of events. You will also need to manage your stats and inventory. The game has a set number of days until it ends so how you manage your time and what routes you take along with the luck or not-so-lucky roll of the dice will determine your outcome, with over 25 possible endings. There are also 6 characters you can eventually romance, each fleshed out with their own back stories to uncover.

The gameplay is set in three stages, The work phase, The free-time phase and the Evening phase. During the Work phase…you work. Serve customers and chat them up. Dice rolls determine your success with a customer and whether you end up making more gold, or less. You start the day with a set number of customers that ramps up as you progress in the game.

Passing and failing dice rolls still progresses the day and each has their own results. Failing a roll makes you lose patience (a critical failure will make you lose a lot). When your patience reaches 0 then you’re done for the day. You can replenish your patience and some items you buy in the shop will give you buffs such as the Fresh Matcha with +5 to patience and +1 to knowledge.

The Free time phase is for fun. Spend time in town, shop, and play. During the demo only the shopping part was available.

The Evening phase lets you access the Quest Board where you earn gold, increase your stats and meet others such as the Keepers of the Keep (other shop keepers that rule the town). Going on multiple quests for any one shop keeper builds your reputation and affection with them. This is where the main part of the visual novel takes place, in your interactions with the quest givers. You can chose up to one quest a night.

Settings, Features & Notes

Settings & features include; pronoun selection (changeable at any time), tutorials on or off and display options. There are also options for text speed and auto-forward time and audio controls. There are also lots of save slots and a history log. You can also hide the hud for screen captures by pressing down your middle mouse button or hitting the H key.

The Visuals & Audio

The character art is very unique in this game. Hand-drawn and each one having their own personality and style. The backgrounds are more simple in nature with the main focus on the sprites but overall they mesh well.

The only part I actually don’t like about the game and my only gripe is the sound effects used for the npc’s voices. They are random sounds but not pleasant. You can mute them by going into settings and turning off the audio for sound effects.

Overall Experience

I really enjoyed this game’s demo and look forward to its full release next year. The characters are all so friendly and vibrant. The game has a very wholesome vibe to it as well as some light-hearted humour. Definitely worth a download to try out. ✨
