Storyteller Review by Amjara
Storyteller is a short puzzle game with an emphasis on the player to craft stories, some romantic, some complex but overall charming.
The Story
This
is a game where you piece together puzzle elements to create the story.
The game takes the form of a book in which you create the story panel
by panel, much like a comic book. For each puzzle you're given a set of
characters and are supposed to arrange them to fit a story of the title
you're given. So there is no one story in this game but a variety of
mini stories to tell divided up into chapters.
The joy of this
game is to play around with the characters by placing them in various
panels to see what happens. Trial and error can be rewarding and
entertaining.
Some of the tales will be familiar to many. Love,
betrayal and jealousy fuel many of the stories. Some are your classic
fairy tales to stories of a Shakespearean nature such as Romeo &
Juliet.
Gameplay & Features
The
settings in this game are pretty straight forward and basic. You have
audio level, language, fullscreen or windowed, quality and the ability
to turn the narrator on or off.
The Visuals & Audio
The
pages of the book are yellowed and look washed out in contrast to the
characters (who look like decals or stickers) and have more colouring to
them. Once you drop the characters into a scene they will play an
animation and those animations will vary depending on their placement in
the story.
The soundtrack sounds like something you would hear
in a story about royalty and the narrator's voice is so well done. I
kept the narrator on as I personally enjoyed his humour.
Tips and Tricks
- After completing the main levels go back through the chapters to play the Devil levels (the chapter level marked with a pentagram)
- There are 31 bonus stamps to collect (for where to find these I suggest looking at one of many great community guides)
- I played the whole game with a mouse but the game does support a controller.
- To get the achievement for playing over two hours close the game and re-open it after the two hour mark for it to activate.
Overall Experience
I
enjoyed this game. It is quite short so I suggest getting it on sale.
But the animations and stories can be pretty funny and entertaining. It
is a really different type of game and really can not compare it to
anything else I have played. So the uniqueness was very refreshing.
There
are not a lot of achievements but they are obtainable without too much
stress. The only one I don't like is having to play for over two hours.
It is obvious to me why that one is thrown in there for such a short
game. Still it did take me close to two hours to actually finish the
game (maybe a tad shy). So take that for what it is.
Overall a fun game that brings something different to the table. 📖
